Leave Office on Time, Reap Rewards

Saw this graphic virally spreading on Facebook. Couldn't agree more.
It's always been one of my principles to go to work on time and leave on time; or at least work efficiently within the schedule.  Staying at office desks beyond 8 or 8.5 hours doesn't always mean that we are hard working. Maybe, we can't efficiently utilize the working hours to do all the day's work.  Beating deadlines though is another story - but we won't need to cram til the last minutes if we have a smarter working scheme to be productive at work.

A smart worker is the one who's able to deliver what is expected of him within the schedule - and be able to leave on time. A smart worker is output-oriented actually.  A smart worker realizes the 7 things listed in the graphic above, reaping its rewards.

But never ever compromise. Don't disregard your work. Embrace it, value it, respect it. Leave on time if, and only if you can really cross-out items in your to-do list in a day.

Employers Must Realize...
The former CEO of Coca-cola, Bryan Dyson also said, "Work efficiently during office hours and leave on time. Give the required time to your family, friends and have proper rest."

This is what I want every employer to look at. They should encourage employees to observe the working time frame efficiently, and discourage working on extended hours. Employers need to feel that their staff are humans - they have family and friends and life outside of work too. Employers must take these 2 things into consideration:
  1. If employees develop conflicts within their relationships because of working time issues, they'd be disturbed at work.
  2. Severe working on extended hours might cause some minor to major health disorders to some. If employees feel bad, they lose proper concentration. they'll need medical attention and they'll probably skip some days of work.
Value Our Lives
If we all neglect our precious time for family, friends and our significant relationships in general, work will also be affected.  Focus and productivity definitely suffers; and it has a domino effect.

We work, we do good at work because we are inspired by our loved ones. Let's just give them the due time and attention they deserve from us. Get a life.

Read back the 7 meaningful items listed above. They're a win-win for both your work and your life outside work.

I am one of those who always leave on time ... the only time I render OT is for this added task given that can be done only after my 8 hour shift but I make sure I allot only 2 hours to it :)

Very true: Leaving office on time more productivity, good social life, good family relationship. I work at home so I guess mine would be going offline earlier... ;) Unfortunately many believes that in order to become successful in life, one must work more. I'll definitely recommend this blog post :)

work smart, not hard hihihi

working productively does not necessarily mean that we have to stay in the office for long hours after work. employers should realize that we are humans and not robots!

Couldn't agree with you more! People who work like that remind me of worker ants. They just go about their business as if on auto-mode. Work is just a tool to make our lives more meaningful, not an end in itself. :)

That said, I've cut down on work load since last year so I'd have more time for my family. I don't want to have any regrets.

Happy new year, Ion! Thanks for the encouraging comment in my blog. :)

i count on this rule however where I am at present, nobody takes value on the family other than work. I hope offices and bosses too can give time for their staffs to wind down. we need space and time too.

thanks for this post.

I really try to have a good work-life balance. I don't want to dedicate all of my life to work. I value relationships more and time for myself that's why as much as possible, I try to work only during office hours. :)

I agree. We always say that time is gold. And remember that if the family and home is organised, you will be more effective at work. ^_^

i can't relate because I'm not working in an office or anything. But yes I agree. Sometimes we have no time to be with our family because of work. It's only a matter of balancing and valuing your time.

When i was still in the corporate world i used to stay beyond usual office hours. But that was out of my passion for work. I also managed to be with family and friends. It's all a matter of balancing your life. That list above, I guess, are for those who cant manage their lives well.

Working hard is no better and it is not advisable for a worker or an employee to do it. But work smartly is better. Before I'm a working-hard employee. I used to burn my midnight candle in working and finishing my assigned job. But I realized later it did not make sense. My body was greatly affected. When I got sick my employer didn't mind my A-1 working output. He would rather put somebody to work for me. Now I work smartly. I organize my job. Doing them as expected by getting into overtime. Going home on time. Spend quality with my wife and my children. So realize: work is work. Play is play!

just like what i learned in cocc and cat, don't come early you're just wasting your time, don't come late you're wasting the time of others, so come on time :)

i've been practising that too since i learned it and it is effective for me.

I can proudly say that I am a hardworking employee. I go to work an hour earlier or even more, because, I hate being late, and I also don't want to waste my time at work, by not leaving on time. I hate rendering forced overtime, but, sometimes, we have no choice. The travel time that I spend each day is around 4-5 hours, from malabon to ortigas, back and forth. These things should be recognized by employers... Have a blessed day! =)

I agree! If employees feel less stress at work, they would have better outputs. Family will always be my first priority. I don't do overtime at the expense of my time for my wife and kids! Yahweh bless

My Organizational Behavior professor emphasizes this all the time. It lets you be more efficient because you use the time given for work to work because you have a deadline. After work, you enjoy and get ready for the next day. Win-win

I am one of those who overwork... I render a lot of time in the office, but I have to also realize that I need time off too, an one way to do that is to leave early or on time. I will be more productive this way, and I resolve to do just that in 2012. Besides, pagbalik mo, nanyan pa rin ang trabaho LoL. :D Here's to a more productive 2012 by being wiser in time management!
